S355J0WP is a European-standard (similar to ASTM A588 or Corten steel), designed to develop a dense, protective rust layer (patina) when exposed to the atmosphere. This patina significantly slows further corrosion, making it a popular choice for bridges, facades, and outdoor sculptures.
When exposed to air and moisture, the steel begins to rust, forming a loose, orange-brown layer.
Over 6–24 months (depending on climate), the rust layer transforms into a dense, dark brown-to-purple patina due to alloying elements like copper, chromium, and nickel.
Self-Protection: This stable patina acts as a barrier, reducing oxygen and moisture penetration, thus slowing further corrosion.

Weathering steel is designed for cyclic wet/dry exposure, which helps stabilize the rust.
